Carving into the ‘flesh of the soul’ for a living

This fascinates me to no end.

  • The surgery soundtrack included Eminem during the drilling portions (until someone complained)
  • The brain is more of a consistency of soft tofu, it doesn’t spread like toothpaste.
  • If you cut out a sizeable cube o’ brain, it retains its shape, with damaged brain being softer.

Serpents Winter Sanctuary

This was the most descriptive article from Wilford, Idaho.

Snakes, perhaps thousands of them, fell on Lyman Hepworth’s head when he opened the door to a pump house near the small house the couple planned to buy.

“When it warmed up, we walked onto the yard and the whole yard moved,” Jeanine Hepworth told the Rexburg Standard Journal.

I ♥ snakes, but even I would be intimidated by unexpectedly facing a horde!

Apparently, this abandoned house they purchased was a winter haven for serpents. The dilemma now, “it could be difficult because if they move them too far they would die and if they move them close by the snakes would likely return to hibernate.”

My only question, HOW CAN THERE NOT BE A PICTURE WITH THIS ARTICLE?! Blasphemy.

Face on Mars Anthropomorphism

I believe this to be anthropomorphism more than anything, but the images are still captivating.

The face on Mars as photographed by NASA in 1976

Below is a perspective view of the structure making up the face seen in the first photo. It doesn’t look quite as I would imagine, to be able cast similar shadows as those seen above.

A side view of the formation

Of course, I am thoroughly entertained by this, because it is so surreal to see a human face in a naturally-occuring landscape is so surreal.

My favorite instance of this is the man on the moon. As I looked for a picture showing this, it became apparent that most see the face differently than I do. Here’s how I perceive it:

Mystery of the One-Eyed Child

In a predictable, but still sad, update to a previous post, the baby with cyclopia in India did not survive. What is especially odd to me, is the cancer drug they’re tying into this defect was called Cyclopamine, so it’s not like the side effects were unknown. WTF?

Intuitive Theories

It is suggested that the human animal evolved to have intuitive theories on the inexplicable. For example, when threatened by a predator, it’s better to pray to your god and find comfort, than to sit and shit one’s pants in fear over the predicament they’re in.

Kinda ties back to my post the other day, about the placebo effect - when you firmly believe in something, it can affect your brain’s chemistry, helping you prevail when faced with an otherwise life-threatening situation.

Also of interest in this article, a professor asks the audience at a science festival if they would put on a blue cardigan for a $25 reward - most would. When he added that it originally belonged to a mass murderer, most hands retracted. Then, whoever did wear it effectively had the plague. People were repelled, moving away from the sweater of doom.

“It is as if evil - a moral stance defined by culture - has become physically manifest inside the clothing.”

That, is a great sentence. Behavior like this is common in the Southern US where I live, but at the British Association Festival of Science?! Surely, logic should prevail in that situation, but I guess we’re all subject to it - being human and all.

20 Inches Tall

This story has been out for a few days, today is the first chance I’ve had to sit down and write. I know the image is a bit large, but it doesn’t resize well while still capturing his charm. In the 3rd photo linked, he’s dancing.

20 inches tall, weighing 10 lbs
( 2 | 3 )

Based on similarities to others, and his perfect proportion, he strikes me as an undiagnosed primordial dwarf. I think it’s a good move, to pursue the Guiness honor for “shortest in the world.” People are going to stare regardless, being the uncouth savages that they are, so he may as well parlay it into something financially rewarding.
