Blind Painter

Western Hirajuku by John Bramblitt Focal Seizure by John Bramblitt

After losing his sight in 2001, John Bramblitt took up painting - an unlikely creative outlet for a blind man.

He starts by outlining his image on unstretched canvas, using fabric paint. He uses oil paint, because each color has its own unique texture that he can differentiate by touch, using the raised surface of the fabric paint as a guide.

Painting compelling art is a talent in itself, but without vision? This guy is amazing!

And Tango Makes Three

Penguin PrideParents are in a snit over a book based on a true story of two gay male penguins from the NYC Central Park Zoo that adopted an egg and raised the chick as their own. Fanatics want it yanked from the shelves, but are willing to acquiesce to having it behind the counter, to be available only upon request and with parental consent.

My advice? Get over it. One book out of thousands on the shelves - what are the odds their kids will even come across it, let alone read it?! 2nd point: Exposure to homosexuality does not make one any more or less gay than originally predispositioned - the end.

Also, this would be a wonderful story for children who do not fully understand their own situation, or that of their classmates, whether they are gay themselves or have gay parents. Disapproving does not make it any less of a reality.

If you personally disapprove of gay sex, please try to refrain from having any. Also, I personally guarantee that you can read this book without turning gay, unless previously inclined.

Die Die My Darling - Chamber of Chills

Chamber of ChillsMisfits, Die Die my darling

Some of my all-time favorite imagery, once again derived from comic books, the most unappreciated often misappropriated lowbrow artform.

The infamous Misfits “Die Die My Darling” artwork is from an issue of an old Marvel comic, Chamber of Chills, sans cigarette. The artist in me hopes that the original artist was somehow compensated for usage, the realist in me doubts it.

I would love to get my hands on these comics, for the artwork alone. It looks like Marvel’s attempt to mimic EC Comics, originator of Tales from the Crypt, Haunt of Fear and Vault of Terror. If the stories are comparable, then I absolutely require these! *covets*

The Flawed and Fascinating Walt Disney

It seems that little is known about the inner-workings of the man. Here’s what I found interesting:

Gas Mask sketch Disney unveiled to appeal to children during World War II

  • His staff labored at the rate of one second of screen time a month during production of Sleeping Beauty - a direct result of his scrutiny and high aesthetic standards.
  • He did not go to his father’s funeral, a man described as “cold, rigid and judgmental”
  • Pinnochio lost money and Fantasia bombed (in terms of cost vs. box office payoff), thereby eliminating plans to collaborate with Salvador Dali. God-effing-dammit!
  • During WWII, Disney made mostly military training and propaganda movies. (See bizarre, child-friendly Mickey Mouse gas mask, shown above.)

Carving into the ‘flesh of the soul’ for a living

This fascinates me to no end.

  • The surgery soundtrack included Eminem during the drilling portions (until someone complained)
  • The brain is more of a consistency of soft tofu, it doesn’t spread like toothpaste.
  • If you cut out a sizeable cube o’ brain, it retains its shape, with damaged brain being softer.

Calico Cat Illustration

Mrowr? Translation: Quite Nuts, Thank You - How Are You?

The results of an assignment in my Computer Illustration class - done in Adoble Illustrator CS2 without using LiveTrace! Reminds me of my own little nut with the intensity in the eyes.

Calico cats tend to be a bit neurotic, to say the least! I’ve heard they are great hunters and barncats.
